This is a brief description of how to use RecueME to remove a Virus(‘s) from your PC.

Download RescueME

Extract the contents of the RescueME.exe (for ease of use extract or move so it's in this location C:\RescueME\ ).

Run RescueME.bat or Rescue98.bat

If you are IT literate you may wish to skip this step and just download and run a virus scanner

• From the opening menu select option 6 and press enter to run hijack this.
• Make a hijackthis log and save the log, DO NOT FIX ANYTHING
• Next download a scanner.

Download a scanner

• From the opening menu select option 1 and press enter
• From the next menu select which virus scanner you wish to download
• I'd recommend downloading at least 2, this reduces the chances of virus's being missed.
• Once downloaded you can run the scanner of your choice, however you may it better to run the scanner in "safe mode" for Win9x and "safe mode with command prompt" for Win NT/2K/XP as this should stop most virus’s from becoming active during the boot process giving you a better clean up.  All scanners will work in safe mode.
• For 9x you may even get a better chance of success by booting into dos mode, rather than safe mode.  However the only scanner you could use would be F-Prot, select command prompt only from the boot menu then run C:\rescueme\rescue98.bat
• To boot into safe mode press F8 when your PC first comes on this will give you a menu option to select from so you will be able to select safe mode.  See here for more instructions on how to get into safe mode
• Once into safe made mode run Rescue98.bat if using Win 98, if your using Win2K/XP "safe mode with command prompt" then type the following C:\rescueme\rescueme.bat assuming this is where you extracted the contents of RescueME to.

After cleaning update your own virus scanner definitions and run a scan.  If your unable to update your definitions because your subscription has run out download and install either AVG, AntiVir or Avast via RescueME.  **** Please make sure you have UNINSTALLED your existing virus scanner first before installing another****  However I would recommend you download the AVG, AntiVir or Avast setup file first before doing this.

Download/install/run/update Adaware/Spybot

Again run adaware/spybot in safe mode.

For users of Win2K/XP run adaware/spybot from "safe mode with command prompt"

At the C:\ prompt type the following:-

cd\
C:\progra~1\spybot~1\spybotsd.exe /autocheck /autofix
cd\
C:\progra~1\lavasoft\ad-awa~1\ad-aware.exe

If you made a hijackthis log you will need to run Hijackthis again, make another log and post in a forum to have the log analysed by an expert to confirm you are free from infection.  Post both logs in one of these forums for help:  ASAP Gladiator Security Atribune Bleeping Computer

If your log is not clean someone will tell you what you need to do to remove all traces of the virus.
